What is a checking fixture, and why it ships with the die

What a checking fixture is, how it is used at buy-off and in production, and why it should be ordered with the die.

Definition

A checking fixture holds a stamped part in its vehicle position, on its datum points, so that its shape, holes, trim lines and flanges can be checked quickly against the specification.

Fixture and CMM

The CMM gives precise measurements of selected points. The fixture gives a fast check of the whole part at the press line. Most fixtures are designed for both: the part is held on the fixture and measured on the CMM.

At buy-off

The fixture and the measurement report show that the die produces parts to the drawing. It is one of the documents your team reviews before signing off the die.

In production

At the line, operators use the fixture to check parts at the start of each batch and at regular intervals.

Why order it with the die

A fixture built by the die maker uses the same data and datum system as the die, and is available from the first tryout. That is why every die we deliver comes with its checking fixture.
